Parker's murderer was soon identified as William Edward Hickman (born February 1, 1908), a 19-year-old former co-worker of Perry. He was arrested in Echo, Oregon, on December 22, 1927, and then extradited to California, where he was convicted of Parker's murder. He made a written confession, in which he explained in detail how he strangled Parker, disarticulated her limbs, and disemboweled her. Following the orders of the ransom, Perry Parker—a bank employee—met his daughter's abductor in central Los Angeles on December 17, 1927. Upon the exchange of the money, the assailant drove away, throwing Marion's mutilated body out of his car as he fled. The child had been significantly disfigured, her limbs cut off, her eyes fixed open with wires, and her abdomen disemboweled and stuffed with rags; her limbs were discovered the next day in Elysian Park.

As Mount Vernon's Mansion Revitalization Project proceeds into 2026, take a deep dive into the various aspects of this landmark preservation project. Among the few recipes known to have been used by the Washington family is this one for Cherry Bounce, a brandy-based cherry drink popular in the 18th century and known to have been enjoyed by George Washington. In 2023, Mount Vernon launched the Mansion Revitalization Project to ensure the long-term health of George Washington’s home. As is standard before any major construction at Mount Vernon, archaeological investigations have preceded all parts of the project that involve breaking ground. Mount Vernon has embarked on a landmark preservation project to ensure the Mansion's structural integrity for generations to come.

The 1992 riots were not the first time the Parker Center became the focus of community frustration. Throughout the 1980s, activists from communities of color gathered in front of the building to protest police tactics. Schave pointed to "haunting" images of crowds gathered at Parker Center. Police officers stood in formation as demonstrations grew and turned violent. Parker Center would become ground zero for the protests and rioting that began after the infamous 1992 verdict in the beating of Rodney King, in which four LAPD officers were acquitted of assault charges. Chief Parker, understanding the value good public relations would have for the department, opened LAPD files to Webb.

After the bottles were unearthed, each was carefully removed and transported to the Mount Vernon archaeology lab. Upon consultation with archaeological conservators, it was determined that removing the liquid contents would help stabilize the glass, which had not been directly exposed to the atmosphere for approximately two centuries.

His character would later inspire Webb when he created the 1950s TV series Dragnet. Part of that vision, Schave said, was a headquarters wired from "head-to-toe." And it was. Fewer than four decades later, the Parker Center would become the focal point for the unbridled rage of a community after four LAPD officers were acquitted of assault charges in the beating of Rodney King. When the Los Angeles Police Departent's new headquarters opened in 1955, the West Coast Modernist structure was the physical embodiment of Chief William H. Parker's dream of a nationally recognized monument to modern policing.

“Consequently, we have made a number of useful discoveries including this blockbuster find of two fully intact glass bottles containing liquid that have not been seen since before the war for American independence. With time, the Parker Center became outdated and was in need of expensive seismic retrofits. After considering a number of downtown sites for a new facility, the city council selected a property directly south of City Hall, Caltrans' former Los Angeles headquarters. Ground was broken for the new building in January 2007, which was dedicated on October 24, 2009. The LAPD Robbery–Homicide Division still operated from an annex of the Old Parker Center. The building was one of the sites of unrest during the 1992 Los Angeles riots that followed a not guilty verdict for the four police officers involved in the Rodney King incident.

The apartment was one of three carved out of the former offices of a silent movie studio owned by the Talmadge sisters. My landlord, who bought the fridge from Parker, was once a bit player at MGM and the front porch of my apartment was the front porch from the Aunt Pittypat house on the Gone With the Wind set. The three pieces of property adjacent to my former apartment, No. 8954, used to be owned by Nina Foch. The Americana Modern collection offers versatile furnishings with classic, welcoming style. With a nod to early craftsman design and today's popular farmhouse aesthetic, Americana Modern is the essence of timeless style.

The walls will start coming down "a little bit later," according to Anna Bahr of Mayor Eric Garcetti's office. Originally called the Police Administration Building, the building was renamed for Parker after his death in 1966. A fair share of America's most notorious criminals passed through its doors, including Charles Manson, Sirhan Sirhan and the Hillside Strangler, who were all booked at the facility.

The 2020 revival of Perry Mason featured a premise based loosely on the murder of Marion Parker. Parker Center is often mentioned in the novels of the Harry Bosch series written by Michael Connelly, the Shane Scully series written by Stephen J. Cannell, and the Elvis Cole and Joe Pike series by Robert Crais. The Parker Center appears in several establishing shots for the Perry Mason between 1958 and 1966. The NBC drama Hunter used the Parker Center in the sixth and seventh seasons. Parker Center is the location of the Priority Homicide Division, and later Major Crimes, in the television series The Closer. At age 69, the last chapter in her life was being written upon his death.

The original Darth Maul design gave George Lucas nightmares

It can be single-bladed or double-bladed, it can rotate around ominously, and it even has handguards. Although The Inquisitor doesn’t duel in every episode, his incredibly original lightsaber is a sight to behold when he does wade into the fight. Arguably, this is one of the most innovative reimaginings of the lightsaber, and it served to make Ventress one of the most unpredictable dueling partners in the Star Wars universe. Darth Sidious must have known that shit was going to go down in Revenge of the Sith – he came prepared with two mini lightsabers. With handles almost as tiny as Yoda’s, both came in handy as the action escalated in the final film of the Prequel Trilogy. Unlike the Original Trilogy, the Prequels waste no time before whipping out their lightsabers.

Specifically, the curved-hilt lightsaber was introduced in Ulic Qel-Droma and the Beast Wars of Onderon. Qui-Gon’s lightsaber is predominantly black, with silver touches here and there. It has the look of a lightsaber created industrially, as if it might’ve come from a factory. This sense of mystery was heightened with Return of the Jedi, when Luke showed up clad in black robes wielding an all-new lightsaber with a then-unique blade color – green.

It was prophetic, however, as Maul had arrived at the rebel base on Atollon. He came to recruit the Padawan for another ritual, one that would finally reveal the answers they seek. Begrudgingly, the boy and his friends went with Maul to Dathomir, where Nightsister magick gifted them the knowledge that Obi-Wan Kenobi was alive, and he was on Tatooine.

Even before Lucas had started the script, his producing partner Rick McCallum was deep in preproduction. He brought in ILM’s art director Doug Chiang, who became the design director for the film. By the looks of it, it must have been made of similar component parts in real life as well as in the film. I’m no expert, but that looks like the balance pipe from a Derwent jet engine parading around as a lightsaber emitter to me. In the Expanded Universe (no longer canon, but still the best answer we have), it’s explained that Obi-Wan left behind a manual on how to build a lightsaber. That nicely fills a narrative hole and explains why Luke’s new lightsaber looks so much like the one Obi-Wan was carrying when he died.

A ‘stupid’ Han Solo idea

darth maul original design

Maul (he’s technically not “Darth” by this point, having been replaced as Sidious’ apprentice by Count Dooku and later Darth Vader) swears vengeance on both Obi-Wan Kenobi and his former master, Darth Sidious. He has a rematch with Obi-Wan during the Clone Wars era, and he even confronts Darth Sidious, though he is bested and loses both his lightsaber and the Mandalorian Darksaber that he’d acquired while consolidating power. Shockingly, The Clone Wars reveals that Darth Maul survived his duel with Obi-Wan, saved by Savage Opress — his brother. Savage even recovered Darth Maul’s lightsaber (half of it) and gives it back to him.

Obi-Wan’s lightsaber from A New Hope has a notably different design to the two Skywalker ones, despite being built by the same creative team. As you might imagine, there’s a bit more at play behind the scenes with this one than cupboard bits, a camera flash, and a calculator. Quickly, Maul deduced that Obi-Wan would not be hiding on this planet for no reason; no, he was protecting something -- or someone.

Killing Darth Maul: George Lucas' Biggest Star Wars Prequel Trilogy Mistake?

Lucas says he originally would have explained more about them in the prequels, but decided not to after the poor reception over the midi-chlorians lore. Simply put, Whills are “a microscopic single-celled life-form” that have a symbiotic relationship with the midi-chlorians and who feed on the Force. They gave the command to the midi-chlorians to make Anakin, with Lucas stating he was touched by God, who in this case “happened to be one-celled animals”. When George Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012, any hopes of seeing how he might have finished the saga went out of the airlock.

We’ve since heard snippets of what he apparently would have done, but nothing substantial. Maul displays Grievous and Dooku to Sidious so that the Sith Lord can see their failure. For someone who opposed Sidious for years on The Clone Wars, Maul is very quick to show off to him – which makes for a bitter, twisted moment in Maul and Sidious’ long-standing Master-apprentice relationship. What do you think of Komari's look being inspired by Maul's original look? Knoles stated that he wanted Komari's look to reflect the pain that she has been through after she was rejected by Count Dooku who initially trained her.

Framed Star Wars Darth Vader Luke Skywalker Yoda Darth Maul Lightsaber Wall Canvas Art - Ready to Hang

Its reveal in the film is glorious, as is its usage in battle – it’s first seen as Maul flips over Qui-Gon in a brief duel in the Tatooine desert, and later used to finish him off on Naboo as Obi-Wan watches on powerless. John Williams’ majestic “Duel of the Fates” score helps add to Maul and his weapon’s cool-levels, too. All these ingenious ideas combined to create the original lightsaber, and the reused and recycled nature of the design has always felt incredibly appropriate for the depression-era galaxy of A New Hope. The lightsaber’s incredible sound design was developed by Ben Burtt, who has since gone on to work on Indiana Jones, E.T., and WALL-E (among many other great films).

His other Star Wars brainchildren include R2-D2’s “voice” and the “peow! The visual effects used for lightsaber blades were overseen by Korean animator Nelson Shin, who had previously worked on the 1970s Pink Panther movies. He came in after Lucas was unhappy with the original effect (they had intended to use a spinning dowel on the blade during shooting, which would reflect light). Instead, Nelson Shin used rotoscoping, a time-consuming animation technique that involves tracing over footage frame by frame.

Following the rite, Maul absconded to his ship, muttering "He lives!" in delirious excitement. But Maul was resilient, and he survived the war to build an empire of his own as the true leader of Crimson Dawn. After his death, Dryden’s first lieutenant Qi’ra assumed control over the territories, working closely with Maul to continue their rule. Yep, this is definitely closer to the final design that ended up in the film. McCaig also admitted that he had originally drawn feathers on Darth Maul but it was mistaken for horns.

Actor Ray Park put on a small, silver earring before sitting down to do the Darth Maul makeup, and only noticed it later. A canonical connection between the Dathomiri witches and the Sith would only be established later on in The Clone Wars, and now continues into the new canon, but the connection was always there in the art. This was confirmed by Bounty Hunter creative director Jon Knoles when he spoke to Screenrant.

Few things have excited Star Wars fans as much as the reveal of Darth Maul’s double-bladed lightsaber — the first of its kind on screen. The hype for Episode I – The Phantom Menace was off the charts, and the lightsaber Darth Maul used contributed immensely to that, as well as the striking image of his horned head and tattooed face. While the character had precious little screen time in the film, he left a lasting impression — and his story has only become more compelling across The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels and other stories in Star Wars. For Darth Maul, lightsaber duels only served to satiate his bloodlust and sharpen the blade of hatred that grew within — hate so strong it needed two blades. When the late, great Christopher Lee became the new filmic villain instead, the curved lightsaber idea remained. His weapon was designed to resemble a rapier handle (including that pointy “guard” bit).

The idea of a “crossguard lightsaber” is another that has now jumped from the Expanded Universe into the world of the films. Hollywood legend has it that Samuel L. Jackson picked the color himself, offering to play the role quid pro quo if he could have a truly unique lightsaber to make his character stand out. Sadly, Windu’s arm was chopped off and his lightsaber was never seen again (in the films). It wasn’t just bad guys getting cool new lightsabers in Attack of the Clones. Diminutive Jedi master Yoda also debuted his patented “all the backflips” fighting style complete with a small-handled lightsaber to fit his tiny green mitts. Following in the footsteps of Darth Maul in more ways than one, Count Dooku became the immediate threat for Obi-Wan and Anakin in Attack of the Clones.

Needless to say, this is one tragic character whose look truly shows what she has endured. There’s also the spear-like Pike lightsaber (above left) and the crooked-handled Tonfa lightsaber (above right) from The Force Unleashed. We’ve not found space to mention the Protosaber, the Forcesaber, and The First Blade, formerly-canon precursors to the traditional lightsaber. Maybe the tables have turned, and it’s now the bad guys struggling through a depression that necessitates make-do-and-mend weaponry.

“You’re going to destroy the franchise; you’re going to destroy everything! ” Lucas explains that he told people at Lucasfilm he was “making a movie that nobody wants to see”, but would rather do that than telling the same story over and over. Star Wars features many stories of young people growing up and finding their true destinies. Luke Skywalker set the example, but Ezra Bridger and Rey followed suit. Maul, on the other hand, is a perpetual apprentice, never able to move past the manipulative relationship Darth Sidious trapped him in. The partnership between Maul and Ezra in Rebels is as much about Maul finding a direction as it is about him giving orders to Ezra.

Norwegian Alaska Cruise Reviews 2024 UPDATED: Ratings of Norwegian Cruises to Alaska

norwegian cruise line alaska

Sample the catch of the day, indulge in king crab legs, or enjoy a hearty bowl of Alaskan seafood chowder – the options are endless. Upon docking at the Mount Roberts Tramway Dock, passengers can easily embark on a scenic tram ride that ascends 1,800 feet to the summit of Mount Roberts. As you soar above the treetops, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of Juneau, the Gastineau Channel, and the majestic mountains that surround the area.

Then get comfortable with where the bars, restaurants, theater, spa, and casino are in terms of being in the front (fwd), or back (aft) of the ship. In order to not feel overwhelmed by the size of the Norwegian Encore, I highly recommend that you study the ship’s deck plans prior to departing on your Alaska cruise. Further, we were largely impressed by the enormous amount of family-friendly activities found on the ship that we knew our kids (ages 11, 14, & 16) would love. We chose to sail on the Norwegian Encore as we were referred by friends who had a great experience, and the fact that the sail dates aligned with our summer vacation week. We recently had the amazing opportunity to take a 7-day Alaska cruise aboard the Norwegian Encore. For enthusiasts with limited time looking to discover Alaska’s historic and extreme ways of life.

Cruise Ship

If you are not crazy like us, there is no need to hustle from one location to the other, as all guests will get a view regardless of whether they are on the starboard side or portside of the ship. The Norwegian Encore has plenty of complimentary dining options including the Garden Cafe main buffet, a 24-hour eatery of classic pub fare at the Local Bar & Grill, and sit-down meals at Taste, Savor, and the Manhattan Room. Do note that the Norwegian Encore also hosts a 13-day “cruisetour” (land and cruise combo) that includes 6 land tours, and 5 ports of call if that is of interest to you. Between tons to do onboard, and visiting 4+ ports, passengers won’t have time to get bored on a week-long cruise.

Least Favorite Spot On The Bliss

Note that any outside activity is weather dependent and will be closed if it’s too cold and/or rainy. I was in the throngs of despair, yes, but at least there was guacamole and I was alone so I could double dip. The shareable guacamole was prepared table side which was a little awkward for this introvert, terrible at small talk. “Seattle.” And then I remembered protocol, looked at his badge which said “Philippines” and asked “small town or large city? ” to which he responded “Manilla,” to which I replied, “oh, BIG city” and he moved on to his next table. While the buffet is large, the selection of items mostly just repeats in many different stations.

This offer features a Premium Beverage Package and 2-meal specialty dining package for a 7-day cruise (balcony and above). It is important to note that guests still need to pay the 20% gratuity on these free perks at the time of booking. No matter where your dream vacation takes you, feel free to cruise your way.

Juneau, the capital city of Alaska, is known for its stunning landscapes, abundant wildlife, and vibrant history. With its towering snow-capped mountains, majestic glaciers, and picturesque fjords, Juneau offers a plethora of outdoor activities and memorable sightseeing opportunities. Whether you’re an adventure enthusiast or a nature lover, this city has something for everyone.

Of note, the virtual escape room is extra money and does require reservations. Our guide gave us a brief tour of the grounds with some narrative about the poles, as well as visiting a replica clan house and a restoration building with some artifacts. After some free time to walk around on our own and visit the gift shop, we were off to Downtown for our lumberjack show. Sipping the signature smoked peach margarita, we stayed for a bit before calling it a night. Though, we actually enjoyed his material from the theater on the first night more.

Furthermore, Norwegian Cruise Line is committed to sustainability and has implemented various initiatives to reduce its environmental impact. The cruise line prides itself on being an eco-friendly choice for travelers who wish to explore the world responsibly. Onboard Norwegian Cruise Line ships, passengers can indulge in a variety of amenities and entertainment options. From expansive swimming pools and luxurious spas to Broadway-style shows and thrilling water slides, there is never a dull moment on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship. Another highlight of Norwegian Cruise Line is its diverse range of itineraries.

There’s also three complimentary main dining rooms, The Local Bar & Grill, and the Garden Café buffet. When you get thirsty, there’s plenty of bars to grab a drink too, including two of our favorites, the Sugarcane Mojito Bar and the District Brewhouse. The Encore offers dozens of onboard activities, including a go-kart track (singles and doubles), laser tag, VR arcade, outdoor pools, hot tubs, and water slides, as well as a fitness center, jogging track, casino, and spa. Other cruise lines, including Norwegian, offer itineraries with varying ports of call.

This allowed them to plan ahead of time which activities they wanted to spend their onboard credit on and prevented overspending. All of the information regarding the next day’s activities and showtimes can be found in the daily newsletter called Freestyle Daily. Hidden at the top of the ship, The Haven suites also feature 24-hour butler service and a private sundeck. For comparison purposes, we took a 7-day cruise on Norwegian Encore that featured 5 ports of call.

While NCL fans give Q mixed reviews, we enjoy this BBQ specialty restaurant. Then, I opted for the smoked turkey breast, and Don went all in on the Pitmaster. The turkey breast was better than I remember, and the Pitmaster featured it all–brisket, spare rib, chicken, and sausage. Arriving to a line of other cruisers still waiting to get back onto the ship as well, it was about 20 minutes later when we actually got back onboard. We did hear that the shuttle back to the ship was a bit of a disaster as well.

Immerse yourself in the cultural performances at the Chilkat Theater and savor local cuisine at the mountaintop restaurant. For nature enthusiasts, the Mendenhall Glacier Dock offers easy access to a network of hiking trails that wind through the surrounding Tongass National Forest. The trails vary in difficulty, allowing visitors of all fitness levels to experience the beauty of the area. As you hike, you’ll be rewarded with awe-inspiring views of the glacier, cascading waterfalls, and the lush Alaskan wilderness. The port of Juneau serves as a gateway to the wonders of Alaska, offering passengers a chance to immerse themselves in the breathtaking beauty and unique culture of the region.

For entrees, I decided to order the appetizer-portion of chicken quesadillas with the Mexican corn and Don ordered the cochinita pibil. The fried beignets were the weakest portion of this meal and did not compare to the similar option we had on Norwegian Prima last year. Upon arriving back into Skagway around 5 PM, we decided to walk back to the ship given the nice weather. Unfortunately, the fudge store was closed and Starbucks was no longer in existence.

Or, longer itineraries that allow cruisers to become more immersed in all that the “Last Fortier" offers. Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry. Since the start, it's been our aim to provide the latest cruise news covering all the major cruise lines. We make sure cruisers are fully prepared for their cruise vacation with tips on ships and ports.Millions of travelers rely on Cruise Hive in the United States, Europe, Australia, and around the world.

So, we had to wait until we got back to the ship for our afternoon dose of caffeine. Now, it was time for the highlight of the tour–our trek up the Klondike Highway into Frasier to board the White Pass Rail. During this nearly 3,000 foot climb in elevation, we made a couple stops for photo ops.

Off the ship, in an Uber, and to the airport, we made ourselves comfy and did work until our late afternoon flight. Thus, we were up early and headed ashore by 8 AM to meet our tour in the main terminal building. This building is quite large but is basically just a gift shop and tour meeting area. Following the comedy show, we headed over to Q for Nashville Nights and Lights. This pretty much consisted of a country line dance class followed by live music and dancing.

The Newest Carnival Ships In Order

newest carnival cruise ships

In 2019, Carnival Cruise Line gave the cruise ship a massive $200 million renovation and a name change to Carnival Sunrise. The vessel originally debuted in 1999 and was the second Destiny class ship. Carnival Jubilee is the third Excel-class ship with the cruise line and was entered into service in December of 2023.

How Many Cruise Ships Does Carnival Cruise Line Have in Their Fleet?

Look up and you’re honestly in for an eyeful — floor-to-ceiling windows, 14-foot LED screens, a ceiling of 1,400 color-changing lights… everything points to BIG FUN happening in here. And even if you’re just passing through, know that you’ll definitely be back later. Center Stage features a rotating selection of live entertainment, while Grand View Bar serves up great drinks with plenty to feast your eyes on. In Grand Central you're never far from cups of comfort at JavaBlue™ Café, great dining spots like Bonsai Sushi™ and Bonsai Teppanyaki™, plus feel-good entertainment like Piano Bar 88™ and The Punchliner Comedy Club™.

ONBOARD DINING

Located on Deck 8, The Shores is a zone inspired by the ways people enjoy the seaside including piers, boardwalks and beaches. Among the new venues in Currents is Dr.Inks, Ph.D, a bar adorned with eight crafty octopus arms that serves unique ocean-themed drinks, and the Golden Mermaid, a cocktail lounge that is home to a mysterious mermaid and offers live music. But the ship also offers some of the first real suites in the fleet, featuring separate living room and bedroom areas, bathrooms with separate tubs and showers, and walk-in closets. The regular battery of daily programming — trivia, game shows, pool games, etc. — also wasn't offered since there were no passengers. In other words, this wasn't a typical sailing, so my account is limited to the aspects of the ship I could experience.

What are the newest Carnival ships? Here's a list of all Carnival cruise ships by age

The ship will feature the cruise line’s new Carnival Fun Italian Style experience, which debuts with the June 2023 arrival of Carnival Venezia in New York. Carnival Fun Italian Style incorporates Carnival’s signature high-energy environment, friendly team members and many familiar venues, plus several new, creative concepts – from Italian-themed restaurants, bars and entertainment. Here’s the most affordable way to experience Carnival Jubilee™, without cutting even a single corner in the comfort department. These two new ships are scheduled to debut in 2027 and 2028 and will be powered by LNG. This will bring the number of Excel class ships in Carnival’s fleet to five.

Carnival Jubilee Voted Best New Cruise Ship of 2023

These screens are the center of the local entertainment, with interactive audio-visual elements that let kids, adults and everyone enjoy and add to the under-this-world seascapes! Plus there’s Seaquest, a show that virtually transforms the zone into a submarine on an adventure we’ll enjoy together. And with everything to see, don’t forget about the fantastical flavors, with Emeril’s Bistro 717™, Dr.Inks, Ph.D.™ and The Golden Mermaid™. Grand Central is designed to make an impression… and that’s good because it’s going to be your first one! You can count on Carnival Jubilee’s atrium to set the vacay vibes for your whole cruise.

Another offering is the tailgate party with games, dancing and prizes, where passengers can pretend they're getting ready to cheer on the fictitious Carnival University football team. When I sailed, I had a chance to see the full production of "Dear Future Husband," a show in which a group of singers and dancers boards a cruise ship for the wedding of two of their friends. When you're finished on Deck 7, the upper level of Currents, make your way up one more deck to The Shores, a beach- and boardwalk-centric zone that celebrates life above the sea instead of under it. There, you'll find the nautically themed Marina Bar, and the ship's deli, Beach Buns. Whatever you do, don't miss Coastal Slice, which serves free and delicious pizza.

It can be a pain to have to venture to a different area of the ship to grab food when your friends and family are looking at other dining options closer to the pool. Cabins in this section of the ship come in several configurations to suit different needs, and they include access to a dedicated lounge, allowing families to spend time together over snacks, drinks and even board games. Also scheduled are events that will allow you to make your own fish, which can be seen swimming by on the screens. And, throughout each sailing, passengers will have at least one chance to see the screens pulsating along, synthesizer style, to music that will play in the Currents corridor. At set times, you can head up one deck — via a staircase with a glittering blue wall that evokes the ocean, offset by a suspended school of swimming fish — to a kiosk that allows you to change the location.

What will Carnival Celebration be like on board?

I loved how the atrium area is now more incorporated into the daily flow of the ship, rather than an area you pass by to get somewhere else. The shows are stunning, with the action extending beyond the stage, including into the air. They make full use of the high-tech capabilities of the performance space.

Carnival also has plans to move more Costa ships to Carnival in the future.

It's the way the ring-lit vanity mirror lights you evenly and shadow-free as you get ready. And even those reading lights, recessed into the wall so you can read in bed without waking anyone! Better comfort, lighting and storage all spring from a deep understanding we've developed around how people actually use their staterooms… and how small changes to the room add up to make the experience that much better. (Enough USB charging ports for everybody’s stuff? Oh yes!) Thoughtful, guest-centric design is how we do it… and all this in-room convenience comes paired with a fresh new look. He's cute, he knows how to chill… and flavor is everything to the little guy. We only just found out about the years he spent soaking up the sun among the grass skirts and frangipani flowers of the South Pacific where, he would tell you, it’s easy being red.

A forever fan of Farcus — I even have one of his piano bar tables in my living room, rescued from Carnival's former Tropicale — I think the design elements (the colors, the decor, the mixture of styles) are brilliant. Here, I'll run through the specifics of what I truly enjoyed while on board, and a few things that gave me pause. Additionally, although it's already built, Costa Firenze — which sailed its maiden voyage for Costa Cruises in 2021 — will become Carnival Firenze when the vessel transfers to Carnival in 2024. The ship debuted in 1996 under the name Carnival Destiny, but the cruise line gutted it, redesigned it from bow to stern and renamed it Carnival Sunshine in 2013. If you're interested in sorting by the year they were built, here's a list of the newest to oldest Carnival ships to help you figure out which is right for you.

Completing Carnival Cruise Line’s XL Class, the LNG-powered vessel will offer new features, in addition to bringing back several attractions of its sister ships Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration. The room stewards worked hard to make sure every cabin was sparkling and set up just perfectly. Longtime GM exec Dan Ammann is out as Cruise CEO

cruise ceo

This isn’t the first time Cruise has gone through a leadership shuffle. Barra ousted Dan Ammann as Cruise CEO in December 2021, replacing him with Vogt, who at the time was chief technology officer. Ammann, who had once competed with Barra for the top spot at GM, wanted to keep the focus on robotaxis, while Barra and the GM board wanted to go big, including putting Cruise’s technology in luxury Cadillac vehicles. The announcement at CES certainly seemed to confirm that version of events.

GM-owned Cruise "failed to disclose" full video and key crash details, DMV said.

Cruise subsequently announced a "pause" of all of its driverless operations in the US, which includes San Francisco, Austin, Phoenix, Houston, Dallas, and Miami. GM CEO Mary Barra would routinely invite him to appear on earnings calls or to speak at investor conferences in a sign that the automaker was fully invested in Cruise. Barra herself went onstage at CES in 2022 and declared that GM would sell fully autonomous vehicles, powered by Cruise’s technology, to regular people by mid-decade.

Supreme Court divided on homelessness case that will affect California encampment policy

But Ammann also oversaw some setbacks, most noticeably the decision to delay a planned launch of a robotaxi service in San Francisco in 2019. The company has yet to commit to a new date but has implied it will be in 2022. By Andrew J. Steelhead trout, once thriving in Southern California, are declared endangered

Ammann was at the center of GM’s initial investment and acquisition of Cruise. Vogt even mentioned his connection to Ammann while onstage at SF Disrupt in September 2018. When Ammann first joined GM in 2010 as vice president of finance and treasurer, his first task was to manage GM’s initial public offering. At the time, Ammann’s appointment as Cruise CEO seemed to signal that an IPO could be a goal. Vogt expressed optimism about Cruise's future without him, saying the team is "executing on a solid, multi-year roadmap and an exciting product vision."

Cruise co-founder and CEO Kyle Vogt resigns

A spokesperson for Cruise said the company had accepted Vogt’s resignation. “Cruise is still just getting started, and I believe it has a great future ahead,” Vogt said on X. He was named CEO in 2022 and formerly held that position from 2013 to 2019, according to his LinkedIn profile. Employee discontent was further inflamed last week when Cruise suspended its employee share-selling program for the fourth quarter. Sources who spoke to TechCrunch on the condition of anonymity said they could lose upwards of tens of thousands of dollars as a result of this decision.

Lucid slashes prices for its luxury EVs for the third time in seven months

The DMV’s order of suspension stated that Cruise withheld about seven seconds of video footage, which showed the robotaxi then attempting to pull over and subsequently dragging the woman 20 feet. The California Department of Motor Vehicles suspended Cruise's deployment and testing permits for its autonomous vehicles after that incident. "When there is an unreasonable risk to public safety, the DMV can immediately suspend or revoke permits," the regulators said in a statement at the time. The automaker’s driverless car subsidiary, Cruise, announced last night the resignation of Kyle Vogt as CEO.

While his departure is apparently unrelated, it does raise questions about the business side of Cruise, aspects of which Ammann and Watson would have been focused on. Cruise had grown from a small startup with 40 employees to more than 1,000 by the time Ammann took over. "As for what's next for me, I plan to spend time with my family and explore some new ideas. Thanks for the great ride!" Vogt wrote.

Toyota’s vision for a futuristic city teeming with self-driving cars has been significantly delayed. In 2022, AV investments went down nearly 60 percent year over year as startups struggled through layoffs or outright closures. The company subsequently paused driverless operations nationwide, appointed a new chief safety officer, recalled all 950 of its vehicles, and retained an outside group to perform an independent safety audit. "Today I resigned from my position as CEO of Cruise," co-founder Kyle Vogt wrote in a post on twitter.com.

It’s unclear, but GM has already tightened the reins by signaling that layoffs would be coming. Cruise has already laid off many of the contract workers who do maintenance and fleet operations for the company. But now it seems like Cruise employees are at risk of losing their jobs as well.

Vogt sent out an email Saturday saying that certain employees could sell a limited number of shares in a one-time opportunity. Vogt didn’t provide many details but said the company was developing a plan to conduct a new tender offer to provide restricted stock unit liquidity to mitigate potential tax implications. The initial layoffs included contract workers who had jobs cleaning, charging and maintaining the vehicles as well as answering customer support inquiries. Not all contingent workers, who are employed by a third party, were laid off.

The agency alleged the self-driving-car company, which reportedly had roughly 400 cars operating in San Francisco, withheld video of a Cruise robotaxi dragging a person down a street. Later that month, Cruise suspended operations across all of its fleets and said it was working to strengthen public trust. Dan Ammann, the CEO of Cruise, the autonomous vehicle company that is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Motors, is stepping down, the automaker announced late Thursday. Kyle Vogt, the co-founder of Cruise and its chief technology officer, will take over as interim CEO. Since then, the autonomous vehicles have drawn complaints for making unexpected, traffic-clogging stops that critics say threaten to inconvenience other travelers and imperil public safety.

cruise ceo

Kyle Vogt, a founder of Cruise, resigned from the company on Sunday, weeks after it suspended all of its self-driving operations. GM didn’t provide a reason for Ammann’s departure except to say he was leaving to “pursue other opportunities.” A spokesperson for Cruise declined to provide any additional comment. "Cruise and GM, we're really totally aligned now on accelerating the joint autonomous vehicle strategy that we outlined at our recent investor day," GM President Mark Reuss told CNBC a day after Ammann left the company. Vogt replaces Dan Ammann, a former president of GM, who was unexpectedly ousted from Cruise in December.

"The startup I launched in my garage has given over 250,000 driverless rides across several cities, with each ride inspiring people with a small taste of the future," he also wrote. Kyle Vogt has resigned as CEO of Cruise, General Motors' autonomous vehicle unit, as questions build about the safety of self-driving cars. Former Tesla and Lyft executive Jon McNeill, a member of GM's board of directors since 2022, was appointed vice chairman of the self-driving unit's board after Vogt's resignation. In 2020, he presided over the rollout of the Origin, the company’s first purpose-built autonomous vehicle. Under his leadership, the company acquired rival AV startup Voyage and raised enough investment to bring its valuation up to $30 billion.

First, a Nissan Sentra "tragically struck and propelled the pedestrian into the path of the AV," Cruise said in a description of the incident. The CEO of self-driving car firm Cruise resigned yesterday following an accident in which a Cruise robotaxi dragged a pedestrian 20 feet. California officials accused Cruise of withholding key information and video after the accident, and the company's self-driving operations are on hold while federal authorities investigate. Morale at Cruise has been low since the October 2 incident, with employees pointing the finger at poor management that didn’t prioritize safety at the company. Without commercial permits to operate in San Francisco and an internal decision to pause its driverless fleets in other states, the company laid off contract workers, further deepening the malaise.

Vogt confirmed his resignation Sunday night in a social media post on X, formerly known as Twitter. He did not give a reason for the resignation, and said he plans "to spend time with my family and explore some new ideas." Vogt will retain his prior positions of chief technology officer and president of the company.
